Time for a nice long weekend without running around through nature, but just stay in 1 place. We arrived Friday before dinner time in a relative flat area, where we’ve been before a couple of times. We tried to find in the dark the same place where we stayed twice […]
Yearly Archives: 2015
Since a couple of months I own a zebra billy can. During the last couple of hikes I have been using it, and made some modifications to make it work better for me. Here they are: Complete set. The metal square holder was removed, and replaced with a 2 mm […]
The plan was to do a 3 day / 2 night winter hike with Tomas and my dog, in the mountains of Czech Republic. According to the weather forecast there was supposedly no more then 5 cm snow, and during the hike it would be around -3 celsius and no […]
With Jan, Linda, my dog and me, we did a 5 day hike. 3 days in snowy mountains, and 2 days in a rocky area without snow to relax a bit from the hard work in the snow. We arrived Thursday afternoon, parked the car, and went to the pub […]
From one of the birch burls I found earlier this month, which has been drying in the garage, I started carving my kuksa. The previous one cracked when I pored boiling water inside of it.. Won’t do that again. The burl harvesting you can see here. The tools, my carving […]
Every year with some friends we rent a couple of canoe’s and go canoeing, fishing, camping, etc, great fun. Those canoe’s are the heavy thick plastic ones which I don’t like too much. For the same money as renting a canoe 10x, I could also buy a used one, which […]
Sunday early morning my dog and I went for a long morning walk in a forest north of where I live. Took some water, my axe, my DIY folding bucksaw in the hope of finding a nice burl for my kuksa. The one I made previously, cracked. The area is […]
Weekend hike with 2 friends from Holland and my colleague and his son. Sleeping place of the 2 Dutch guys. Sleeping place of my colleague and his son. My sleeping place. We hiked in at night, made a fire for dinner, and slept over, and this is the next morning […]
Just a simple nice hike in a beautiful area, with my friend Mirek and my dog. The hike went a bit different then planned, but nevertheless still nice. After we arrived on Friday evening, we put up our hammocks, and made a fire for dinner. Dinner existed of meat on […]
Enjoying a nice cigar in the forest, due to me having a successful eye laser surgery 2 weeks before. Doc said all healed well, and my vision is better then standard now
For a long time I planned to make some birch oil and use it for my axe handle. The method is simple, bigger can which you can close with a hole in the bottom, and a smaller can under it to catch the oil.
Nothing special, just some progress on some knives that I worked on previously and started working on. The big boy is made from a grenade shrapnel, from the kosovo war. And as last making a firesteel and testing it.
I’ve always had a fear of heights. And this limited me in certain area’s which are great for hiking. So a couple of months ago I decided to start with climbing in an indoor place, together with Mirek who is more advanced. He taught me a lot of technique on […]
Together with a couple of friends we did this spring hike. About 44 km, several castle ruins, up and down man hills, and lots of fun.
Some time ago I bought a Polish lavvu, M size (170-180), and used it a couple of times in the garden to test out some sleeping pads, Czech army bedroll, etc. Problem was the space. Me being 177 cm tall, would barely fit it in. Time passed and I attended […]
What was supposed to be a hike, turned out to be more a lazy weekend where we decided to stay in 1 place due to it’s great surroundings. Made some fire, cooked on it, and relaxed. Mireks son also joined us for a day only.
During the last few weeks on every day hike and dog walk I collected pine resin to purify it on a later date. Now I collected enough, and decided to go for it. The plan was to melt it in the old big pan, filter it with the filter, and […]
Every now and then I like to try my fire making skills with the firesteel, so today I took 6 different natural materials that are commonly available and tried to ignite them.
With a friend from Holland, here a small overview of the 3 day, 2 night trip in the west of Czech Republic. After parking the car, we left the path and went straight through the fields to a hill which has a ruin on top of it. In the fields […]
This morning I decided to make a new steak cooker (aka squirrel cooker), with the added value of having a pot hanger on the other side. Nothing too fancy, and all steps visible in the video.
For a friend in Holland, I made this spork from a 8mm thick metal rod, which is used in beton. It took about 40 minutes of heating in the forge and hammering it into the shape. The slices in the fork where done with an angle grinder. Quenched it in […]
For a very long time I wanted to make a bridge hammock. My normal hammocks are fine, but it happened twice that I woke up with a unpleasant feeling from the squeezing on my shoulders. So I wondered if a bridge hammock would be more convenient. On Hammock Forums are […]
Went for a day hike with my dog, in the north of Czech Republic. Wearing my recently cleaned shoe’s, and took my recently made leather axe case + a sitting pad. Package of bacon in my pocked, and ready to go.
Some time ago I made a carrying case for the axe and bucksaw, being inspired on the Ray Mears version of it. I just had it not upside down, and added 3 pouches on it. It was nice, works well, but after a while I preferred something more sturdy, stronger, […]
For quite a while I wanted to make 2 bottle holders for my 0.5 Liter stainless steel water bottle, to attach to the shoulder straps of my backpacks. Also bought a couple of 30 cm zippers to make some “kifaru pullouts”. This is the results: – 3x ripstop nylon, kifaru […]
Maintenance in general is something I like to do, just not with my shoe’s.. My summer hiking shoe’s which I own now for 5 years or so, I cleaned them once properly, and twice put some leather cream on it. The winter ones I own 1.5 year now and never […]
Besides the spoon in the previous post, I also did a new handle for my Cold Steel Trailhawk. Everything was done with my carving axe. Surprisingly it was easier then expected. This is the piece I brought back from the forest yesterday. Chopping the rough shape. Then the rest was […]
From these pieces of wood, I chose the right one to be my new spoon. This wood I brought back from the forest yesterday while walking my dog there. With my carving axe, I cut out the rough shape of the spoon. Then with the Mora Spoon Knife 164, I […]
This morning I took my new “jager rucksack”, Cold Steel Trailhawk, DIY knife, and my dog for a walk in the forest. I parked the car, let the dog out, and off we went. Close to the path I noticed a young birch that had fallen over, most likely in […]
Due to receiving several questions lately about axes, which one to choose, which length, weight, etc, I thought I would post the below to give a clear picture on why I chose for this axe, why I modified it, etc. So this below is why it works for ME, and […]
Today I had finally some time for modifying a hatchet for a friend Chose the hatchet, and made a rough drawing. Transferred the drawing to the hatchet. Removing the dark parts. After every second cut I cooled it in the snow. It definitely didn’t over heat, cause after the second […]
