With my best drill bits at the slowest speed, I could not even get a dent in it.<br \/>\nBeing curious what this bullet was made of, I decided to cut it open in the length with my angle grinder.<br \/>\nI started at the back, working my way to the tip.<br \/>\nAlmost at the tip, it started suddenly flashing with bright sparks, so I quickly moved away.<br \/>\nWhen it was done &#8220;flashing&#8221;, and my tool shed was aired, I checked what happened.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/dabberty.com\/?attachment_id=2818\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2818\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/dabberty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kogel5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2968\" height=\"1668\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2818\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dabberty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kogel5.jpg 2968w, https:\/\/dabberty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kogel5-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dabberty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kogel5-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dabberty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kogel5-800x450.jpg 800w, https:\/\/dabberty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kogel5-655x368.jpg 655w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2968px) 100vw, 2968px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Whatever was inside of the tip, was burning so hot that it even melted a hole in the tip from the side.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/dabberty.com\/?attachment_id=2819\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2819\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/dabberty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kogel6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2968\" height=\"1668\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2819\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dabberty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kogel6.jpg 2968w, https:\/\/dabberty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kogel6-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dabberty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kogel6-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dabberty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kogel6-800x450.jpg 800w, https:\/\/dabberty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kogel6-655x368.jpg 655w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2968px) 100vw, 2968px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I contacted a colleague who has a passion for guns etc. He asked me to check the backside of the casing.<br \/>\nAfter cleaning it, it showed SL4 on it.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/dabberty.com\/?attachment_id=2820\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2820\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/dabberty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kogel7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1920\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2820\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dabberty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kogel7.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/dabberty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kogel7-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/dabberty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kogel7-768x1365.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dabberty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kogel7-450x800.jpg 450w, https:\/\/dabberty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kogel7-655x1164.jpg 655w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He did some searching and found that this means it was made in St. Louis, in 1944, therefore used by the US air-force when they where firing at the Germans during WWII.<br \/>\nIt turns out that this was a API round, Armour Piercing Incendiary.<br \/>\nThe white phosphor in the tip is dangerous stuff, I was quite lucky nothing serious happened.<\/p>\n<p>Moral of the story is, don&#8217;t cut old ammunition open, unless you know 100% what it is.<\/p>\n<p>More information on the round itself and the casing can be found here:<br \/>\nhttp:\/\/www.nebraskaaircrash.com\/50caliber.html<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With my little cousin we did some metal detecting, in the hope to find some nice old coins.
